Bahia de Caraquez was named after the Cara Indians, who, according to legend, came from the ocean and settled at the mouth of the river Chone. During the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, Bahía de Caráquez was an important and wealthy port city for the exports of bananas and cacao. These exports now take place from the ports of Guayaquil and Machala.

Today, the importance of the port of Bahía de Caráques is marginal. The city is well-known in Ecuador as a resort town. Inhabitants of Quito own many of the apartments in the residential towers along the coast in Bahía de Caráquez.
