Overview

Tips for driving in Mexico

  • Don’t drive at night. At night, you can encounter anything on the road. Animals may use roads to stay warm and criminals may use roads for robberies.
  • Use toll roads if possible. Using toll roads has many advantages: 1) they are faster than free roads, 2) you're insured when using toll roads, 3) the Ángeles Verdes (a roadside assistance service part of the Ministry of Tourism) patrols tolls roads, and 4) toll roads are in a better condition than free roads.

Temporary Import Permit (TIP)

When you drive to Mexico, you will need a Temporary Import Permit (TIP) for your vehicle except if you do not leave Baja California, Baja California Sur or the free economic zone along the border.
