Since 2023, Ecuador has seen a sharp increase in extortion cases. Most extortions occur in the coastal region, but there are also numerous extortion cases in the Andes region. Most victims are businesses, but private individuals can also become victims.
Extortionists usually call their victims. There are also cases of extortionists visiting physical locations, but this method exposes them more, so it is rarer.
Recommendations to Prevent Being Extorted
- Stay low profile: avoid displaying wealth (jewelry, expensive electronics), avoid conspicuous clothing, and use a modest car.
- Protect and be careful with personal information, especially financial information. Never share financial information when somebody calls you.
- Do not withdraw large amounts of money without a police escort. Police escorts are free and can be requested by calling 911.
- Keep your travel plans private and only share them with trusted individuals.
- Constantly change the routes that you walk or ride.
- Be alert when you leave a car or bus.
- Make it clear that all businesses in your area are organized against crime.
Recommendations When Faced with an Extortion Call
- Stay calm.
- Listen carefully to what the extortionist says without giving any additional information.
- If possible, record the extortion calls.
- Don't confront the extortionist. Don't hang up the call either.
- Report your case to the police. The police have a special Anti-Kidnapping and Extortion Unit (Unase).
- Report your case to the embassy of the country of which you are a citizen.
