How to cancel an Ecuadorian visa

Introduction

If you have a temporary resident visa, a permanent resident visa, or a temporary visitor visa, you can cancel your visa if it is still valid. You can do this at an office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Ecuador or at an Ecuadorian consulate abroad.

Example

If you stay in Ecuador on a permanent resident visa, you cannot spend more than 180 days outside the country per year during the first two years after you have received this visa. If you spend more than 180 days outside Ecuador, you will receive a fine when you return to Ecuador. In this case, it may sometimes be wiser to cancel the visa before you have spent 180 days outside Ecuador. If you do so on time, you won't receive a fine, and you can reenter the country as a tourist. Because the rules for tourists apply. This means that you will get 90 visa-free days when you return to Ecuador if you are cititizen of the USA, Canada, etc.

When to apply

To prevent receiving a fine, you should apply for the visa cancelation before the moment at which you don’t comply with your visa requirements anymore.
