Cotacachi Expats Experience Break-Ins After Security Service Ends
Residents of Tierra Firme II in Cotacachi were left shaken this past weekend after a coordinated break-in at two homes. The incidents occurred on Saturday, January 4, just one day after the neighborhood guard service was abruptly discontinued on Friday, January 3.
According to one of the residents affected, a woman who lives as an expat in Cotacachi, the break-ins happened simultaneously at 7:30 PM. Despite her home being equipped with an active alarm and motion detectors, the perpetrators managed to carry out the crime. Security footage from their community cameras reportedly captured eight to nine individuals involved in the attack. The apparent leader of the group, who is suspected of having visited her home on multiple occasions prior to the incident, was armed.
The situation turned violent, with the woman was tied up during the break-in. Another resident, also an expat, suffered injuries requiring hospital treatment and stitches.
The abrupt loss of security services and the subsequent incidents have left the community alarmed. Residents are now calling for improved measures to ensure their safety.
