Agriculture and livestock have historically been the primary occupations for Challuabamba's residents, involving the cultivation of various crops. Some residents seek employment outside the parish, working in factories, industries, artisan workshops, construction, and businesses in the city of Cuenca. The traditional craft of making toquilla straw hats still employs 16% of the women, and the high-quality hats are exported to various countries. Commerce primarily takes place in the city of Cuenca.
