Floods
Four rivers cross Cuenca. These rivers can cause floods in certain areas.
Earthquakes
Cuenca has been hit by earthquakes many times in its history. It is one of the reasons why there are not many buildings left from the colonial period. Almost all buildings in the historic city center are from after the colonial period.
The reason is that Cuenca is located on the so-called Girón fault. Researchers at the University of Cuenca estimate that about 60% of buildings in Cuenca will not survive a major earthquake. It is therefore important to pay attention to the construction quality of the building when renting or buying a home.
