Day of the Deceased
| November 2 (2025) | |
| Ecuador |
Day of the Deceased (Spanish: Día de Difuntos), is a traditional holiday in Ecuador celebrated on November 2nd. It coincides with the Catholic observance of All Souls' Day and blends pre-Columbian Indigenous practices with Christian traditions. The day is dedicated to honoring and remembering loved ones who have passed away.
On this day, many families gather at cemeteries to clean and decorate the graves of their loved ones. It's also a time for reflection, prayer, and sharing stories about the deceased.
Bakeries sell guaguas de pan. This is sweet bread shaped like babies or dolls and symbolizes the connection between life and death. "Guagua" means baby in Quechua. In bakeries you can also find coloda morada, a thick, purple-colored drink made with black corn flour, fruits like blackberries, blueberries, and naranjilla, and flavored with spices such as cinnamon and cloves. This drink represents the life and blood of ancestors.
