Using Starlink in Ecuador
Starting from April 18, 2023, you can now enjoy the benefits of Starlink in Ecuador.
How Starlink Works
Starlink operates in 32 countries, including Ecuador, using a network of 4,200 nanosatellites connected by lasers. These satellites orbit the Earth at an altitude of 2,000 kilometers. To access Starlink, users receive a service kit with a compact antenna designed for easy roof installation, an electrical regulator, and a router similar to those used by cable or fiber optic providers.
Speed
According to Ecuador's Ministry of Telecommunications, Starlink offers an average download speed of 100 megabits per second (Mbps) and an upload speed of 40 Mbps. However, Starlink claims to provide a 300 megabits per second service on its website.
Costs
To get started with Starlink, you'll need to purchase an installation kit priced at $355, plus shipping costs. The monthly subscription to Starlink is $60. Starlink also offers a 1TB service for $158 per month.
Advantages
- Starlink is available throughout Ecuador.
- Installation is straightforward, making it easy for users to start using Starlink.
Disadvantages
- Starlink tends to be more expensive than traditional internet providers with landlines.
- The internet speeds offered by Starlink may not match those of landline-based providers.
- Some intermittent connectivity issues may still be experienced with the Starlink system.
When to consider Starlink in Ecuador
In certain rural areas where Starlink is the only available option, it becomes a viable choice. However, when possible, it is recommended to opt for an internet service provider with a landline, as these companies generally offer faster and more reliable internet at lower prices.
In specific regions, such as the countryside around Cuenca, some internet service providers, like Puntonet, offer services through antennas when landlines are unavailable. Consider exploring these alternatives for reliable connectivity in such areas.
