On the Plaza de las Flores (officially known as the Plazoleta del Carmen), you will find a small and picturesque flower market. It’s a perfect place to take pictures. When you buy some colorful flowers, the vendors will be happy to pose with you for a photo.
History
The Plaza de las Flores has not always been the place of a flower market. Back in 1910, it was used for commercializing hats.
Monasterio del Carmen and Iglesia El Carmen de la Asunción
West and south of the square is the Monasterio del Carmen (Convent of Carmen). South of the square is the Iglesia El Carmen de la Asunción (Church of Carmen de la Asunción), which is part of the convent complex. The construction of the convent complex started in 1730 and was completed in 1782. Nuns are still living in the convent.
Agua de pitima
On the east side of the Plaza de las Flores, the nuns of the convent sell agua de pitima, a health tonic made from flowers and sweetened with honey. It is said that this pink drink helps with depression and calm people down. It’s pretty popular among locals.
