Location

Cuenca is located in the southern region of Ecuador, in the Andes mountain range. Specifically, it is located in the Azuay Province, in the valley of the Tomebamba River.

Cuenca is situated at an altitude of about 2,500 meters (8,200 feet) above sea level, making it one of the highest major cities in Ecuador.

Surrounding Cuenca, you'll find picturesque mountain landscapes, including the Cajas National Park, which is located about 30 kilometers (18.6 miles) west of the city. The park is known for its scenic lakes, high-altitude grasslands, and abundant wildlife, including llamas, Andean condors, and many species of birds.
